How to use: Blue-bike in Belgium

What is Blue-bike?

Blue-bike is a highly convenient bicycle rental system with over 100 locations spread across Belgium, predominantly situated near train and bus stations. It offers 24/7 availability for renting bicycles at a maximum cost of only €3.50 for the initial 24 hours, in addition to an annual fee of €12. Moreover, Blue-bike provides Ethias Assistance in case of any bicycle issues during your journey. What’s more, you can rent two bicycles using just one card! Almost every bicycle adventure featured on Captain Yeller’s blog in Belgium will be linked to Blue-bike!

The Blue-bike Bicycle

The comfortable blue bicycles provided by Blue-bike are designed to be user-friendly. They come equipped with two locks for added security: a wheel lock and a cable lock. Additionally, you’ll find a convenient basket on the back of the Blue-bike where you can place your bag or belongings. The bike’s lights are fully automatic, ensuring visibility during your rides. Adjusting the saddle height is also made easy, allowing you to raise or lower it according to your preference and comfort.

How does Blue-bike work?

Blue-bike operates on a membership basis, requiring users to register and pay an annual fee of €12. Once you become a member, simply place your Blue-bike card on the card reader at the station, and the bike is yours until you return it. You can locate one of the more than 100 Blue-bike stations by visiting their website, and you’ll find that Blue-bike stations are available in most major cities. There are several methods to become a member, and the following steps will guide you through the process of becoming a member.

Sign up online

To become a member, you can easily register on the Blue-bike website . Select your account type: Personal or Business (Captain Yeller will focus on Personal). Click the right arrow to proceed to the next screen. Fill in all your personal details and click the right arrow again. On this screen, provide your payment details. If you have a MOBIB Card, you can enter the 19-digit card number and use it as your Blue-bike Card. For everyone else, simply continue by clicking the right arrow and complete the registration by confirming your email address. Congratulations! You are now a proud Blue-bike member. Your Blue-bike Card will be delivered to your address by mail within 5 days (for locations within Belgium).

Please note that the payment for renting the Blue-bike is connected to the Blue-bike Card, and the rental cost will be automatically deducted from your bank account on a monthly basis. You will only be charged if you actually make a rental. You can easily track your ride history by accessing your personal online account.

Remember that the yearly membership fee is €12, and your subscription will be automatically renewed. To cancel your subscription, you must do so at least two weeks before the renewal date. Please note that non-payment of an invoice without canceling your membership does not constitute a valid termination. You will still be responsible for the membership fee if you fail to cancel on time. You can terminate your membership through your online account or by sending an email to info@blue-bike.be.

Sign up at a bicycle point

If you can’t wait to start riding a Blue-bike right away, you can visit one of the bicycle points during office hours to sign up. The membership at a bicycle point costs 19 euros, which includes 12 euros for your Blue-bike membership and 7 euros for two trips. Your Blue-bike card will be sent to you within 5 days (for locations within Belgium) and can be used after the initial two trips.

The Blue-bike App

With the Blue-bike app, you have convenient access to various features and information. You can use the app to find locations where you can borrow a Blue-bike and see how many bikes are available at each location. The app allows you to access your ride history, where you can see details such as the start location, start time, end location, and end time of each ride. For rides on Blue-bikes with a smart lock, you can even view the route you took during the ride. Rest assured that the ride details and routes are only visible to you. Blue-mobility will only request route information in exceptional cases, such as when a bike is lost or stolen. If you finish your ride at a Blue-bike location, you can use the app to report any defects for a bike equipped with a smart lock. This helps ensure that the bike is promptly repaired for the next user. In case of a breakdown during your ride, you can rely on Ethias bicycle assistance. To download the Blue-bike app, simply follow these steps:
For Apple devices: Open the Apple App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
For Android devices: Open Google Play Store on your Android phone or tablet.

In the search bar, type “Blue-bike” and press Enter or tap the search icon. Look for the official Blue-bike app with the title “Blue-bike” and the Blue-bike logo. Tap on the app when you find it to access the app’s page. On the app’s page, tap the “Install” or “Get” button to begin the download and installation process. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. The app will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Once the Blue-bike app is successfully installed, you can open it and start using it to access the various features and services provided by Blue-bike. Enjoy your rides!

What does Blue-bike cost?

Membership fee

The annual membership fee for each Blue-bike card is €12.

Using Blue-bike the first 24 hours

The regular rate per bicycle of Blue-bike applies in the following locations: Antwerp (all locations), Ekeren, Aalst, Brussels (all locations), Ghent (all locations), Hasselt, Blankenberge, De Panne, Knokke, Heist, and Sint-Truiden, and it is €3.50.

In Deinze, Landegem, and Ninove, you have the opportunity to rent a Blue-bike for free during the first 24 hours, thanks to a contribution from the city.

At all other locations, you can rent a Blue-bike at a discounted rate of €1.50, thanks to the contributions from the city/commune and the Flemish government, making it an affordable option for everyone.

Using Blue-bike for more than 24 hours

Between 24 hours and 48 hours: €3.50.
Between 48 hours and 72 hours: €5.50.
For each additional 24-hour period beyond 72 hours: €10.50.

If you have kept your Blue-bike for longer than 72 hours, you will be required to pay a minimum of €19.5 (€3.5 + €5.5 + €10.5), in addition to the rental cost for the initial 24 hours (ranging between €0 and €3.5).

Additional Charges

In case you need to replace your Blue-bike card, a fee of €10 will be charged.

If you choose to return your Blue-bike to a location different from where you initially rented it, a surcharge of €20 will apply. Please ensure that you return the bike to the same location where you rented it to avoid this surcharge.

If you keep the Blue-bike for a period longer than 30 days, an extended rental fee of €550 will be applied. Please make sure to return the Blue-bike within the specified rental period to avoid incurring this fee.

Possible costs at your own risk

Replacement cost for a lost or stolen key: €30.
Repair costs for damages to the Blue-bike due to careless use.
Theft of the Blue-bike (requires returned key and police report – police report only for smart Blue-bikes): €50.
Theft of the Blue-bike (without returned key and police report): €550.

How to borrow a Blue-bike?

Locations with a key distributor

To borrow a Blue-bike, sign in at the key distributor using your card (Blue-bike card or MOBIB card) or enter the 10-digit voucher code. Follow the instructions displayed on the screen. A drawer will open, containing a red-lit key. Retrieve the key from the drawer. Locate the bike with the corresponding number on the rear mudguard of the Blue-bike. Remember to return the bike within 24 hours to the same Blue-bike location where you borrowed it. Once you arrive, secure the bike in the designated bike parking area and scan the black key tag on the machine. A drawer will open, allowing you to insert the key into the red-lit slot. Upon successful closure, you will receive a confirmation on the screen. If no message appears on the screen, contact Blue-bike to verify if any issues occurred during the return process.

Locations with smart Blue-bikes

To borrow a Blue-bike, start by tapping the saddle to wake the bike from its sleeping mode. You will hear a series of beeps. Next, hold your card against the card reader on the lock or scan the QR code located on the handlebar of the Blue-bike. The lock will then unlock, allowing you to take the bike. Remember to return the bike within 24 hours to the same Blue-bike location where you borrowed it. Once you arrive, place the bike in the designated bike rack and close the lock by tilting the handle and pushing it down. The GPS signal will detect that you have returned to the correct location, and your ride will automatically end. You can always verify if your ride ended correctly by checking the mobile app.

Blue-bikes must be returned to their original location. If you choose to return the bike to a different location, an additional fee of €20 will be charged. It is important to ensure that you bring the Blue-bike back to the same location where you initially borrowed it to avoid any additional charges.

If you accidentally took the key home, it’s important to return it as soon as possible to ensure your ride time is properly closed. If you don’t intend to return to the location where you borrowed the Blue-bike, you can send the key back by post. We recommend using registered mail for security purposes. Send an email to info@blue-bike.be to request the correct address for returning the key.

Borrowing two Blue-bikes at the same time

Borrowing two Blue-bikes at the same time is allowed. However, please keep in mind that the rental fees and terms of use apply to each bike individually. You will need to follow the standard borrowing process for each bike, including presenting your Blue-bike Card or MOBIB Card at the key distributor or using the Blue-bike app for smart bikes. Each bike will have its own rental period, and you will be responsible for returning both bikes within their respective time limits.

Please note the following important information if you borrow two bikes but do not stay together:
If you wish to lock both bikes separately, please keep in mind that when you want to continue your ride, you will need either the Blue-bike card that was initially used or access to the user profile in the app. It is crucial to agree in advance on who will be responsible for carrying the card and who will utilize the app.

In the event that you require urgent assistance with your lock, you can quickly reach out for help by sending a text message to 8686. Please include “BLEU,” followed by the location, and provide a brief description of the problem you are experiencing.

What if the Blue-bike bicycle get damaged or stolen?

If your Blue-bike has a defect, there are two options depending on your proximity to the Blue-bike point:

Near the Blue-bike point

If you are close to the Blue-bike point, you can return the bike and report the problem through the key distributor. When returning the key to the key distributor or via the Blue-bike app for smart Blue-bikes, you have the option to report any defects with the Blue-bike. Once reported, several options are available to you. The bike will be blocked to prevent further borrowing until the bike point can carry out the necessary repairs. If you return the bike within 15 minutes, you can get a new bike free of charge.

More than 1.5 km away from the Blue-bike point

If you are further away, you can utilize Ethias’ free Blue-bike assistance by following these steps:
Call Ethias at 011/28 28 28.
Provide them with the policy number: 45.338.256.
Provide your Blue-bike card number.
Provide the bike number (located at the rear mudguard).
